Improve GK handling & footwork

Team A Team B Goalkeeper Joker (+1, always plays for the team with the ball) Ball Cone Pass Dribble Run Shot
Activity 1 Technical Warm-Up
30 yds 20 yds GK GK
GK Handling Warm-Up
Setup: TRAINING AREA = 20W x 30L. The number of balls should equal the number of GKs involved in the warmup. Field players should pass the ball around the space. When the GK makes eye contact with the player; the field player in possession should take a touch and "shoot" on the GK. The objective of the shot is to go towards the GK (no around them, not over them, and not past them). Shots should be taken from 12-15 yards away. *Only shoot on GK's command.
Goal: Goalkeepers mix in among the field players, who pass the balls around the space. When a keeper makes eye contact with the player in possession, that player takes a touch and shoots straight at the keeper from 12 to 15 yards so the keeper can handle it (not around, over, or past them). Players only shoot on the keeper's command. The aim is clean handling reps, not scoring.

Coaching Points

  • Hands should make early contact and let their hands make contact on the ball. Do not wait for the ball to make contact with the body
  • Players should move their feet quickly, with short strides, and step towards the ball
  • Watch the ball all the way into your hands and collect it in front of your body
Activity 2 Small-Sided Activity
40 yds 30 yds GK GK
4v4 Four-Goal Game
Setup: TRAINING AREA = 30W x 40L. Place (2) goals on each end-line in the corner making a total of (4) goals in the space. Red (4) v White (4). Each team's GK defends (2) goals. Score by shooting into the goal.
Goal: Two teams of four attack the two corner mini goals on their opponent's end line and defend the two on their own, with each team's single goalkeeper responsible for its pair of goals. You score by shooting the ball into either goal you are attacking. Having two goals to defend forces the keeper to shift across and stay set.

Coaching Points

  • As the player with the ball looks up then down, the GK should take small steps to get in position
  • Place my weight on my toes, and point my body towards the ball
  • Shift between your two goals as the ball travels so you are set before the shot
Activity 3 Expanded Small-Sided Activity
40 yds 30 yds GK
4v4 to One Large Goal
Setup: TRAINING AREA = 30W x 40L. Place (1) on each end-line for each team to attack. Red (4) v White (4). Score by shooting into the goal.
Goal: Two teams of four play to a full goal on each end line, each defended by a goalkeeper, and score by shooting the ball past the keeper into the goal. This gives the goalkeeper live repetitions of set position, handling, and reacting to shots from open play.

Coaching Points

  • Hands should make early contact and let their hands make contact on the ball. Do not wait for the ball to make contact with the body
  • When: The player looks up, then down - should be ready for a shot
  • Be set and balanced as the shooter strikes; lead with your hands to meet the ball
Activity 4 Game
Goal: Apply what you practiced today in a real game.

Play a scrimmage with the biggest teams possible, or play small-sided if you have fewer players or less space. Reinforce all points above.
